Gilwood
One of the most successful nestboxes ever designed.  Unique entry allows more air flow than standard entries while the adjustable wire limits functional height to keep large avian predators from reaching inside the box.  Box is easily mounted on 1/2" conduit/rebar system.

Nestbox Features
1.  Roof Drip Guard
A continuous groove routed into the roof's underside helps prevent rainwater from migrating from the roof edge to the box.  More effective at blocking the water's path than traditional saw kerfs.

2.  Smooth Entries
Edges of entry holes are rounded over and sanded smooth on both sides to minimize feather wear on adult birds.

3.  Exterior Toe Holds
Shallow saw cuts just below the entry aid adult birds in gripping the box exterior.

4.  Interior Bird Ladder
Saw cuts are made on the interior below the entry to help nestlings climb out at fledging time.

8.  Nylon Door Bearings
Installed over the pivot screws between the door and sides, these nylon washers provide a constant 1/32" space between door and side panels.  The door operates smoothly, and binding is minimized if the wood swells from moisture. (left click on above image for larger view)

Note:  This feature does not apply to nestboxes using the new polypropylene hinge.
5.  Weather-proof Fasteners
Exterior deck screws are used in the construction of all nestboxes.

6.  Galvanized Latch Nail
Double hot-dipped galvanized duplex head nail resists corrosion and rust.  Installed at a downward angle to prevent the nail from working loose.  Double head nail is easy to grip.

7.  Silicone caulk on seams
Fixed panel seams (roof, back and sides) are caulked to provide a weather resistant seal.

Classic 22 Front Opening
(10° pitched roof)
A front opening, pitched roof nestbox with a 22.5 square inch floor.  Great ventilation comes from slots against the roof on both sides and over the door - a total of 4 1/2 square inches of vent area.  The pole mounting block (included) with predrilled 3/4" hole provides easy mounting on 1/2" ID conduit, although most any size pole may be used.   This block also protects the vents from windswept rain approaching from the rear, which helps prevent leaking so common on most pitched roof nestboxes with side vents.  The front opening, bottom hinged door makes adding a sparrow trap easier than on boxes with top pivoting doors.  Uses the new polypropylene hinge.
